Through an interactive, online classroom, you’ll begin your master’s in public health online with a selection of core courses followed by a curriculum specific to the professional track. You’ll receive flexible schedule options, so you can learn at your own pace and complete your degree on your own time. The aim of this course is to provide an overview of topics related to substance use and the impact these have on public health. Areas of focus include: prevalence rates, the link between substance use and mental illnesses, special populations, recovery-oriented systems of care, advocacy and mental health community services. Using case studies, you’ll learn about the public health challenges for creating effective primary level prevention services and engagement of people into treatment in order to lessen and eliminate substance use in the population.

This course will provide a broad overview of health disparities and cultural issues in our society, with a focus on race, ethnicity, socioeconomic conditions, and social norms. You’ll explore health disparities through a lance of social justice with a focus on structural factors such as public policy, discrimination, and healthcare systems. A belief and value systems will be examined.
